Area covered by our gazetteer of villages

Our gazetteer covers only those towns, villages and hamlets located in the southern part of the Huddersfield-based metropolitan district of Kirklees.

Most people living in this area will have no problem defining that as there is the ridge of hill between the northern and southern portions of the Kirklees metropolitan district. There are also no motorways, A roads or even B roads linking the north and south of Kirklees metropolitan district without going into another metropolitan district along the way.

But for those not familiar with area, the gazetteer covers the former Huddersfield County Borough and former Colne Valley Urban Distict and the present civil parishes of Kirkburton, Denby Dale, Holme Valley and Meltham.

Most of the boundaries of the area covered are that of the Kirklees Metropolitan district, but with a northern boundary the same as that of the Kirkburton civil parish, and therefore not including towns, villages and districts around Mirfield and Dewsbury, nor Batley, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Heckmondwike etc.

The area covered around Huddersfield has a population of about 243,000, about 56% of the total Kirklees metropolitan district population of 433,300.

The gazetteer also does not include places in the neighbouring Calderdale metropolitan district where there are towns and villages, including Brighouse and Elland, which are only around 4 miles from Huddersfield town centre. You can find out more about these at at  Yorkshire.guide.
