Drought brings ban on using hosepipes
August 26, 2022

Deanhead Reservoir in the Scammonden Valley on Sunday August 21A hosepipe ban began on Friday August 26 stopping the use of hosepipes with mains water for most purposes, including nearly all domestic uses such as watering a garden, filling a pond, washing a car or cleaning windows.

The ban had already been planned in advance of the Government's Environment Agency adding Yorkshire to a list of areas officially recognised as being in drought on Tuesday August 16. That was ironically a day which saw a return to some periods of rain after the long dry spell.

Some of Yorkshire Water's reservoirs in the Pennines are particularly low. At Baitings Reservoir at the head of the Ryburn Valley, near Ripponden, the old road bridge across the valley, flooded when the reservoir was built, has been revealed below the new higher bridge. Other reservoirs are not quite so low, but Yorkshire Water says its reservoir levels are feeling the impact of much lower than average rainfall since the beginning of March, starting August 50% full — 20% lower than usual.
