Imbolc heralds spring in Marsden

It may have sleeted and snowed in Marsden during the day but the Colne Valley village heralded the end of winter and beginning of spring in spectacular style on the evening of Saturday February 3.

Imbolc is one of the earliest of events celebrating the end of winter. The Celtic-style fire festival, held in Marsden every two years, features a show in which the Green Man fights off Jack Frost.

The event started at around 7pm with a parade of flaming torches and lanterns from near Marsden railway station to Tunnel End, near to the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre, where there were perfomances from fire jugglers, the battle between Jack Frost and Green Man characters and a firework finale.

The festival was started in the village in 1990 and is now held at the start of February on alternate years. A massive crowd from Marsden and much further afield were in the village to watch the show.
