Town appoint new head coach after narrow escape from relegation July 23, 2020

John Smith's Stadium, HuddersfieldThe day after their 2019-20 season came to an end, Town announced that Carlos Corberán, previously assistant coach at recently-promoted Leeds United, has been appointed as their new head coach.

Town ended their season on Wednesday July 22 with a 4-1 loss behind closed doors at Millwall and were no doubt thankful of their 2-1 win at home to West Bromwich Albion the previous Friday evening, without which they could have seen a very different end to the season.

A draw or a win against Millwall would have seen Town claim for themselves the certainty of their Championship place next season, but, as so often during the season, it fell upon the slightly lesser performance of other clubs to help Town keep their ground above the relegation places.

With in-administration Wigan Athletic given a 12-point deduction, which is still to be appealed, Town end the season 18th of the 24 Championship clubs, one higher than they would have been.

Unless Wigan win their appeal, Barnsley also survive as a result of their last-minute 1-2 win at Brentford and clubs in the relegation places are Charlton, Wigan and at the bottom Hull.
