Emley
At the centre of Emley is the stump of its medieval market cross, the village having gained a market charter in 1253.
The village existed before the Domesday Book and in recent centuries thrived from its agriculture and the mining of iron ore and coal. Mining came to an end in 1985 with closure of the Emley Moor colliery. Emley Moor Business Park is now at the colliery site.
A conspicuous feature of the village is the TV transmitter station about 1.5 miles away at Emley Moor. The TV mast is the UK's tallest free-standing structure and listed building and at 330m (1,084ft) is taller than The Shard in London, which claimed fame when built as Western Europe's tallest inhabited building.
Emley Moor is also the location of the annual Emley Show, one of the area's top one-day agricultural shows, typically attracting over 10,000 visitors. The show is usually held on the first Saturday in August each year and will be held on Saturday August 5 in 2023.
