Netherthong including Deanhouse
The village is on the western side of the Holme Valley, the centre of the village being on a ridge between the Holme Valley and the valley of Dean Brook.
Netherthong was a small village with a long history, but has seen considerable expansion with new housing since the latter part of the 20th century.
The connected hamlet in the valley of Dean Brook is known as Deanhouse and was the location of local mills, which have now been replaced with housing.
The Deanhouse Wesleyan Church built at Haigh Lane, Deanhouse, in 1769 was one of the oldest in the area and John Wesley himself preached there in 1772 and 1773. It later became known as Netherthong Wesley's Methodist Church. The congregation joined the Netherthong Zion Methodist Church in 1958 and the original chapel was converted to a house. The Zion chapel in Giles Street had been built by breakaway Wesleyan Reformers in 1872, but this chapel had also closed by 1985.
The Huddersfield Poor Law Union built a workhouse at Deanhouse, which opened in 1862. It continued to be used as a hospital called St Mary's from 1938 to 1968, but this was demolished two years later to become a housing estate.
